Exfoliation has the best risk-reward asymmetry in skincare: done right, glow and smoother texture in weeks; done wrong, a wrecked barrier that takes months to repair. The optimal frequency is lower than most people think — here are the numbers by skin type and acid type.
| Skin Type | Chemical (AHA/BHA) | Physical (Scrub) | |-----------|--------------------|-------------------| | Normal/combination | 2–3x/week | 1x/week max | | Oily/resistant | 3–4x/week (or daily low-strength BHA) | 1–2x/week | | Dry | 1–2x/week (gentle AHA/PHA) | Avoid | | Sensitive/rosacea-prone | 0–1x/week (PHA only), patch test first | Avoid | | Acne-prone | 2–3x/week BHA | Avoid (spreads inflammation) | | Mature (50+) | 1–2x/week gentle | Avoid (thin skin tears) |
General rule: start at the low end, stay there until your skin asks for more. You can always add frequency; recovering from over-exfoliation takes weeks.
Chemical (acids) — dissolve the bonds between dead cells evenly:
Physical (scrubs) — mechanically abrade:
Chemical wins on safety and consistency for almost everyone.
The damage curve is sneaky — early signs feel like "results":

Peeling solutions (The Ordinary red peel etc.): max once weekly, on retinoid-free nights, never on irritated skin — these are professional-strength and deserve respect.
Only low-strength BHA (0.5–2%) on genuinely oily, resilient skin, or daily-use PHA formulas. Daily glycolic at meaningful strength is how barrier damage happens. If your skin is comfortable, hydrated, and unreactive, mild daily chemical exfoliation can work — but it's not necessary or better.
Night. Exfoliation (especially AHA) transiently increases photosensitivity, and nighttime gives skin recovery hours without UV exposure. Follow with moisturizer, and SPF religiously the next morning.
Beginners: no — alternate nights (acid Monday, retinol Tuesday). Experienced users with robust skin sometimes combine, but it multiplies barrier stress. One active per night is the rule that keeps skin alive.
Stinging from gentle products, tightness, new breakouts, unusual sun sensitivity, flaking that moisturizer doesn't resolve. Any one of these — stop for two weeks and rebuild with cleanser/moisturizer/SPF only.
It helps flat dark marks (PIH) by accelerating pigment turnover. Textural scars (icepick, boxcar) need procedures — microneedling, lasers, subcision — home exfoliation can't remodel dermal collagen defects.
