The skincare industry sells 12-step routines because 12 steps sell 12 products. Your skin needs four to five. Here's the framework dermatologists actually recommend, what to buy first, and — just as important — what to ignore.
That's it. Everything else is refinement.
| Skin Type | Cleanser | Moisturizer | SPF | |-----------|----------|-------------|-----| | Oily | Foaming gel (CeraVe Foaming, La Roche-Posay Effaclar) | Gel-cream (Neutrogena Hydro Boost) | Lightweight lotion SPF 50 | | Dry | Cream/lotion (CeraVe Hydrating, Vanicream) | Rich ceramide cream (CeraVe Cream, Vanicream) | Hydrating SPF (EltaMD UV Clear) | | Sensitive | Vanicream Cleanser | Vanicream/CeraVe | Mineral SPF (Blue Lizard, Vanicream) | | Acne-prone | CeraVe Foaming or SA cleanser | Oil-free lotion (CeraVe PM) | Neutrogena Hydro Boost SPF 50 | | Combination | Gentle gel (CeraVe Foaming) | Lotion, heavier at night | Any comfortable SPF 30+ |
AM: cleanse (or rinse) → moisturizer → SPF 30+ PM: cleanse → moisturizer
Do nothing else. Let your skin settle. This alone improves most people's skin visibly — a functioning barrier plus daily sun protection is 60% of the game.
| Concern | Add (PM) | Product Example | |---------|----------|-----------------| | Acne/blackheads | Adapalene 0.1% | Differin, $10–15 | | Anti-aging/texture | Retinol 0.2–0.3% | The Ordinary, CeraVe Resurfacing | | Dark spots | Azelaic acid 10% | Naturium | | Oil/redness | Niacinamide 5–10% | Naturium, The Ordinary | | Dullness | Glycolic toner 2x/week | The Ordinary Glycolic 7% |
Introduce at 2–3 nights/week. Never add two actives in the same fortnight — if your skin reacts, you need to know which product did it.
Only once your treatment is comfortable nightly:
| Step | Product | Price | |------|---------|-------| | Cleanser | CeraVe Hydrating/Foaming | $12–16 | | Moisturizer | CeraVe Moisturizing Lotion/Cream | $14–18 | | SPF | Neutrogena Hydro Boost SPF 50 | $12–15 | | Treatment (later) | Differin or The Ordinary Retinol | $8–15 |
Total: ~$50–60 for months of a dermatologist-aligned routine. Everything premium beyond this is comfort, texture, and marginal gains.

Thinnest to thickest, treatments before moisturizer, SPF always last in the morning: cleanse → serums/actives → moisturizer → (AM only) sunscreen.
Four to five: cleanser, moisturizer, sunscreen, plus one treatment matched to a specific concern. A hydrating serum is the fifth when dryness calls for it.
Yes — start with 0.2–0.3% (or CeraVe's encapsulated formula) at 2–3 nights/week with moisturizer. Adapalene 0.1% is the better-studied OTC retinoid if acne is the goal.
Last, in the morning — after moisturizer, before makeup. Nothing goes over SPF except makeup. Two-finger amount for face + neck.
Barrier and hydration improvements: 1–2 weeks. Texture and breakout changes: 6–8 weeks. Pigment: 3+ months. Wrinkle prevention: years (that's what SPF is quietly doing). Judge routines at the 8–12 week mark, not week 2.
