If you wear sunscreen (and you should), a single cleanse isn't enough. Double cleansing — using an oil-based cleanser followed by a water-based cleanser — is the most effective way to ensure clean, clear skin. Here's the science and the best products.
Double cleansing involves two steps:
An oil, balm, or cleansing oil dissolves oil-based debris on your skin:
"Like dissolves like" — oil cleansers break down oily substances that water-based cleansers can't fully remove.
A gel, foam, or cream cleanser removes water-based debris:
This second cleanse ensures skin is thoroughly clean without leaving an oily film.
Modern sunscreens are formulated to be water-resistant and long-wearing. They use film-forming polymers and silicone-based ingredients that adhere strongly to skin. A regular water-based cleanser alone often fails to fully remove SPF — leaving a residue that can:
Try this experiment — apply sunscreen to the back of your hand. Wash it with your regular cleanser. Then take a cotton pad with micellar water and swipe it over the area. You'll see residue come off.
Now you understand why double cleansing matters.
Oil-based cleansers work on a fundamental chemistry principle: polar and non-polar substances dissolve in similar substances.
A water-based cleanser alone simply cannot dissolve non-polar substances effectively. The surfactants in water-based cleansers can emulsify oils, but they can't match the dissolving power of an actual oil.
The #1 benefit. Properly removing SPF prevents clogged pores and allows your nighttime skincare to work effectively.
With no residue barrier, serums and actives penetrate more effectively. You'll get more from your retinol, Vitamin C, and other actives.
Clogged pores from SPF/makeup residue are a major cause of breakouts. Double cleansing eliminates this cause.
Residue buildup causes dullness. Removing it completely reveals brighter, fresher skin.
Double cleansing allows you to use a gentle water-based cleanser (because the oil cleanser does the heavy lifting). This is better for your skin barrier than using one harsh, stripping cleanser.

Oil cleansers need time to dissolve SPF and sebum. Massage for a full 60 seconds, not 10.
Hot water strips skin lipids and can cause broken capillaries. Lukewarm only.
The oil cleanser leaves a thin film. The water-based cleanser removes this and ensures thorough cleaning.
Choose a gentle, pH-balanced cleanser (pH 4.5–6.0). The oil cleanser did the hard work — the second cleanse should be gentle.
Residue from either cleanser can cause irritation and breakouts. Rinse thoroughly.
If you truly don't wear SPF (you should!), double cleansing is less critical. However, sebum and environmental pollutants still build up during the day, and oil cleansing removes them more effectively.
Micellar water removes some SPF and makeup, but it's not as thorough as an oil cleanser. Also, micellar water leaves surfactant residue on skin. If you use micellar water, follow with a water-based cleanser anyway.
Not if you use the right products. The oil cleanser dissolves debris without stripping, and a gentle second cleanser doesn't need to be harsh. Avoid SLS-containing cleansers and hot water.
You can, but it's usually unnecessary. Your evening double cleanse removes SPF and the day's buildup. In the morning, a single gentle cleanse (or even just water) is sufficient unless you have very oily skin.
Choose a cleansing balm or oil that rinses completely clean. The Ordinary Squalane Cleanser and Farmacy Green Clean are formulated to rinse without residue. Follow with a quick splash of water and a gentle cleanser if needed.
