Titanium Dioxide
INCI: titanium dioxide
Titanium dioxide is the second mineral filter, delivering highly efficient UVB plus short UVA-II protection with excellent photostability and skin tolerance. It is the gentlest filter for hypersensitive and paediatric use alongside zinc oxide. Its limitation: coverage stops at ~360 nm, leaving long UVA-I unprotected, which is why serious sunscreens pair it with zinc oxide or modern organic UVA filters. Micronised (nano) grades reduce whitening; coatings (silica, alumina) prevent reactive oxygen species generation. At 5–15% it is a reliable, reef-commonly-accepted filter for daily care. Apply generously — mineral filters form a protective film that must be complete to work.
