Sodium PCA
INCI: sodium pca
Sodium PCA (pyrrolidone carboxylic acid, sodium salt) is a core component of the skin’s Natural Moisturising Factor — the humectant blend that keeps the stratum corneum hydrated naturally. Its water-binding capacity is only marginally lower than glycerin’s, yet it feels lighter and less tacky on skin. At 1–3% it restores moisture in dehydrated, tight, or post-cleanse skin and improves flexibility of the stratum corneum. Sodium PCA is non-irritating, suitable for the most sensitive skin, and stable across formulation types. It features prominently in hydration toners and essences; layering it under a sealing cream gives dry skin a comfortable, dewy finish without weight.
