Salicylic Acid (BHA)
INCI: salicylic acid
Salicylic acid is the only prominent oil-soluble beta-hydroxy acid, which lets it dissolve sebum and penetrate deep into the pore lining — exactly where blackheads and clogged pores form. At 0.5–2% it exfoliates dead skin cells, unclogs pores, and reduces acne lesions, while its keratolytic action smooths rough texture. As a relative of aspirin it also brings genuine anti-inflammatory relief to angry, red blemishes. Unlike AHAs it is self-neutralising in the follicle, limiting over-exfoliation risk. Oily and acne-prone skin benefit most; dry skin should target the T-zone only. Use at night, protect with SPF daily, and avoid combining with strong retinoids in the same evening until tolerance is established.
