Retinal (Retinaldehyde)
INCI: retinal
Retinal — short for retinaldehyde — is the direct precursor to retinoic acid and works up to eleven times faster than retinol because it requires one fewer conversion step in the skin. It delivers comparable collagen-stimulating and anti-acne benefits with generally lower effective concentrations, typically 0.05–0.1%. Retinal also has inherent antibacterial activity against Cutibacterium acnes, making it particularly interesting for adult acne with simultaneous anti-aging goals. It is inherently photosensitive, so it belongs in airless, opaque packaging and a night routine. As with all retinoids, introduce slowly, moisturise generously, and use daily sun protection.
