Lithospermum Erythrorhizon Root Extract wird aus der Wurzel des ostasiatischen Borretschgewächses (Shikon) gewonnen und enthält als Hauptwirkstoffe die Naphthochinon-Derivate Shikonin und Alkannin. Diese rot-violetten Farbstoffe besitzen ausgeprägte entzündungshemmende Eigenschaften durch Hemmung der COX-2-Expression und der TNF-α-Freisetzung in Makrophagen. Zudem inhibiert Shikonin die NF-κB-Signaltransduktion, was die Expression proentzündlicher Zytokine reduziert und die Hautberuhigung bei akuten Entzündungszuständen beschleunigt. Der Extrakt zeigt zudem antioxidative Aktivität durch Neutralisierung freier Radikale und antibakterielle Wirkung gegen Propionibacterium acnes und Staphylococcus aureus.
