Ectoin
INCI: ectoin
Ectoin is an amino-acid-derived "extremolyte" produced by desert and salt-lake microorganisms to survive lethal environments. It works by forming structured water shells (kosmotropic) around proteins and cell membranes, stabilising them against heat, UV, dryness, and salt stress. In skin, documented effects include reduced UV-induced and pollution-induced damage, hydration retention, and inflammation calming at 0.5–2%. It is exceptionally well tolerated — no irritation on record at cosmetic doses. Ideal for sensitive skin, frequent flyers, city dwellers, and after laser or peels. Molecular-level stress insurance rather than a flashy active — and all the better for it.
