Ceramide 1a (EOS)
INCI: ceramide 1a
Ceramide 1a is the acylceramide EOS class — the longest ceramide in human skin, acting as a molecular rivet that spans the lamellar sheets and locks barrier integrity. Its linoleate tail is essential for the long-periodicity lamellar phase whose loss shows up as dryness and sensitivity. Atopic and aged skin are specifically deficient in this class. Topical restitution at 0.02–0.2% within proper lipid mixtures measurably reduces water loss and reactivity. Best used in complete ceramide-cholesterol-fatty acid systems; the rivet works only when the rest of the wall is supplied too.
