Bakuchiol
INCI: bakuchiol
Bakuchiol is a meroterpenoid extracted from the Psoralea corylifolia (babchi) plant and the most credible natural retinol alternative to date. Clinical comparison studies found 0.5–1% bakuchiol produced significant improvement in wrinkles and pigmentation over 12 weeks, comparable to retinol, but with far less scaling, stinging, and dryness. Mechanistically it modulates retinoid-receptor-related pathways without the irritation cascade of retinoic acid. Crucially, unlike retinoids it is considered safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding — though medical advice is still recommended. It is photostable, tolerates morning use, and suits sensitive skin, retinol-intolerant users, and anyone seeking gentler anti-aging.
