Alpha-Arbutin
INCI: alpha-arbutin
Alpha-arbutin is a glycosylated form of hydroquinone, derived from bearberry plants, that inhibits tyrosinase — the key enzyme of melanin production. Unlike hydroquinone it releases hydroquinone slowly and in tiny amounts, so it brightens without the irritation, ochronosis risk, or regulatory restrictions of its parent compound. At 1–2% it fades dark spots, melasma, and post-acne marks with visible results in 8–12 weeks. It is stable, non-photosensitising, and safe for long-term daily use on all skin tones. For enhanced effect it is frequently paired with niacinamide, tranexamic acid, or vitamin C — a core component of any evidence-based hyperpigmentation routine.
